Staying Near Taipei Main Station (2026): Which Side, Who It Suits and What to Know

Staying near Taipei Main Station is the most practical choice for many visitors to Taiwan’s capital. The station is the city’s transport heart: the Taoyuan Airport MRT ends here, Taiwan Railway and high-speed rail trains leave from the same complex, two Taipei Metro lines (Red and Blue) cross underneath, and the main intercity bus station is next door. From one base you can reach Ximending or Zhongshan in a single stop, Taipei 101 in about fifteen minutes, and cities such as Taichung or Tainan on the high-speed rail. This guide explains the streets around the station, who it suits and what to know before you book.

What is the area around Taipei Main Station like?

The station sits in Zhongzheng District, close to the old city walls. The streets around it are busy and practical rather than charming: office towers, cram schools, department stores, camera shops on the streets to the south, and food courts and underground shopping malls that stretch for blocks. Within walking distance you’ll find the historic North Gate, the Presidential Office Building, the 228 Peace Memorial Park and the National Taiwan Museum. It’s lively during the day and quieter after the shops close, though the station itself stays busy late.

Hotels around the station cover the whole range, from hostels and simple budget hotels in older buildings to large full-service hotels and modern design hotels. Rooms are often compact, and some cheaper rooms have no window, so read descriptions carefully.

Which side of the station should I choose?

Taipei Main Station is huge, with several underground malls and many numbered exits, and the walk between the wrong exit and your hotel can take ten minutes or more with luggage. The west and north-west sides are closest to the Airport MRT station, the bus station and the North Gate, which helps if you’re arriving from Taoyuan Airport. The south side faces Zhongxiao West Road and the government district, with easy walks to the 228 Peace Memorial Park. The north-east side leads towards Zhongshan, with more cafés and restaurants and a calmer evening feel. Look at a map with the exit numbers before you book, and choose a hotel within five minutes of an exit with a lift if you have big bags.

Areas around Taipei Main Station compared

Area Best for Getting around Watch out
West / North Gate Airport MRT, buses, early flights Airport MRT, bus station, walk to the Metro Busy roads; older buildings
South (Zhongxiao West Road) Museums, parks, government district Red and Blue lines, NTU Hospital station Few restaurants late at night
North-east towards Zhongshan Cafés, calmer evenings Red line one stop to Zhongshan Longer walk to the Airport MRT
Ximending (one stop) Nightlife, budget stays Blue line one stop Crowds and late noise
Zhongshan (one stop) Couples, food, shopping Red line one stop Mostly mid-range prices

What are the advantages of staying here?

The biggest advantage is time. You can be on the Airport MRT within minutes of leaving your room, so early flights and late arrivals are simple, and some airlines offer in-town check-in at the Airport MRT station on the day of your flight. Day trips are easy too: high-speed rail to Taichung, Tainan or Kaohsiung, and regular trains towards Ruifang for Jiufen and Shifen or to Yilan. For the city itself, the Red and Blue lines reach Tamsui, Beitou, Xinyi, Longshan Temple and the East District without a change. When it rains, the underground malls and food courts make it easy to stay dry.

What are the downsides?

The station’s size is the main drawback: finding the right exit takes practice. The area has fewer late-night restaurants and less atmosphere than Ximending or Zhongshan, and the streets around the main exits are busy with traffic. Some budget properties are in older buildings with small rooms. If you’d rather step out into street food and lights, stay one stop away and use the station as your transport hub.

Who should stay where?

  • Short trips and first-time visitors: near the station, ideally on the west side for the Airport MRT.
  • Travellers taking day trips by high-speed rail: right by the station.
  • Nightlife and street food lovers: Ximending, one stop away; see Ximending vs Zhongshan.
  • Couples: the north-east side or Zhongshan.
  • Families: the station area for convenience, or Da’an for parks.

How long should I stay near the station?

For a short city break of two or three nights, the station area alone works well. On longer trips, many travellers start here for an easy arrival, then move to Zhongshan, Da’an or Beitou for a different feel, and come back to the station for the last night before an early flight. Because the Airport MRT, high-speed rail and metro all meet here, changing bases is quick and cheap.

Where can I eat near the station?

The station building has a large food court with Taiwanese and international dishes, and the underground malls are full of quick noodle, dumpling and bento shops. Department stores nearby have restaurant floors. For a local night market, Ningxia Night Market is about a fifteen-minute walk north, and Ximending’s street food is one stop away. Convenience stores are everywhere for breakfast, snacks and drinks.

How do I get here from the airport?

From Taoyuan International Airport, the Airport MRT express takes about 35–37 minutes to Taipei Main Station, depending on the terminal, with trains about every fifteen minutes through the day. Airport buses run to the station area too, including some overnight services, and taxis take about 45–60 minutes. From Songshan Airport, take the Brown line and change to the Blue or Red line. See Taoyuan Airport to Taipei for details.

Notes for families and travellers with reduced mobility

All Taipei Metro and Airport MRT stations have lifts, but in Taipei Main Station they can be far apart and some exits have only stairs or escalators. Check the station map for exits with lifts and choose a hotel near one. The underground malls are flat and air-conditioned, which helps with children in hot or rainy weather. Taipei’s pavements are generally good, though arcades in older streets can have small steps between shopfronts.

Day trips that are easiest from the station

Jiufen and Shifen, the hillside old street and the sky-lantern village, are reached by train towards Ruifang and then a bus or taxi, in roughly one to one and a half hours. Taichung and Tainan are an hour or two away on the high-speed rail. Tamsui’s riverside sunset is at the end of the Red line, and Beitou’s hot springs are on the same line with a short branch. All of these start most easily from Taipei Main Station.

Tips before you book

  • Search the hotel’s address on a map with the station exits shown, not just the district name.
  • Check whether the room has a window and what size it is in square metres.
  • Ask about luggage storage before check-in and after check-out.
  • Book flexibly for holiday weekends: see hotel cancellation policies explained.
