Hotel With Taipei 101 View: Where to Stay for New Year’s Eve (2026)

Booking a hotel with a Taipei 101 view is one of the simplest ways to make a Taipei trip feel special — and on New Year’s Eve, it can mean watching the fireworks from your window instead of standing in a crowd of hundreds of thousands. The 508-metre tower dominates the Xinyi District skyline, but which rooms actually see it depends on the street, the floor and which way the window faces. This guide explains where those views are, how New Year’s Eve works around the tower, and when to book.

Which Taipei 101 hotels actually have a view?

Most Taipei 101 hotels advertise “views”, but there’s a difference between seeing the whole tower lit up and catching a slice of it between office blocks. The tower sits at the southern edge of Xinyi’s grid of department stores and offices, with Elephant Mountain behind it. Hotels a few blocks north, east or west, especially those above about the 15th floor, tend to get full-height views. Inside the tower itself there’s no hotel; the 89th-floor observatory and the 101st-floor outdoor deck are ticketed attractions.

Area Best for Getting around Watch out
Xinyi core (near Taipei City Hall) Closest full views; malls and restaurants Blue Line, Taipei City Hall station Highest prices; roads close on 31 Dec
Around Taipei 101/World Trade Center station Walking distance to the tower Red Line, Taipei 101/World Trade Center Views can be blocked by nearby towers
Xiangshan / Elephant Mountain foot Quiet streets; walk to the trail Red Line terminus, Xiangshan Few hotels; residential area
Songshan / Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Distant views across the park; better value Blue Line, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Partial view from many rooms
Da’an / Zhongxiao Dunhua Cafés, food, central location Blue and Brown lines Views mostly from high floors only

Where is the best Taipei 101 view?

The best Taipei 101 view without a hotel room is from Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan), where a stepped trail climbs from near Xiangshan station — the last stop on the Red Line — to platforms looking straight at the tower. It takes 20–30 minutes and is steep, but the sunset view is famous. Other good spots include the plaza at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and the rooftop bars of Xinyi. From a hotel room, the classic shot is from the north or west across the Xinyi shopping district, with the tower’s segmented shape lit in changing colours.

Where to stay for Taipei New Year’s Eve?

If you’re deciding where to stay for Taipei New Year’s Eve, think about the walk home. The city’s main countdown concert is held at the Taipei City Hall plaza, and the fireworks are launched from Taipei 101 itself at midnight. Roads around Xinyi close to traffic during the evening, taxis can’t get close, and MRT stations near the tower are crowded for hours after midnight. Staying within walking distance — Xinyi, Xiangshan or Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall — means you can watch, then walk back while others queue. In recent years, Taipei Metro has run continuous service for about 42 hours over New Year, from the morning of 31 December until midnight on 1 January, on most lines; 2026–27 arrangements haven’t been announced yet, so check before you book.

How do the Taipei 101 fireworks work?

The Taipei 101 fireworks start at midnight on 1 January and are fired from the tower’s sides, so the whole building appears to burst into light for several minutes. The show is broadcast live, and in some years has included light animations on the tower’s façade. Based on previous years, popular viewing spots fill from the afternoon: Elephant Mountain’s platforms are packed by early evening, and the City Hall plaza area requires security checks. Arriving with a plan, warm layers and a power bank makes a big difference. Dates and the programme for the 2026–27 countdown are usually published by the city in December.

Is a room with a view worth it?

For 31 December, a view room is often the most-requested room type in Taipei and priced accordingly. For a normal stay, it’s worth it if you’ll spend evenings in the room, or if you’re celebrating something. Otherwise, a standard room in Xinyi plus a sunset trip up Elephant Mountain gives you the same experience for less. Check the hotel’s photos and room description carefully: “city view” doesn’t always mean the tower, and “partial view” can mean seeing it at an angle.

How early should I book for 31 December?

Treat New Year’s Eve in Xinyi like a major event. Rooms with tower views are booked by Taiwanese couples and visitors from across Asia months ahead, and many hotels set minimum stays of two nights or require full prepayment for 31 December. A practical approach is to book a free-cancellation rate as early as summer, then keep checking for a better room as the date approaches. Prices usually fall back quickly after 1 January. If the tower area is full, look at hotels near Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall or Zhongxiao Dunhua: from there you can still walk to a viewing spot in 20–30 minutes and avoid the station crowds. Our guide to the best time to book a hotel explains how peak-date pricing works.

What’s Xinyi like as a base?

Xinyi is Taipei’s modern business and shopping district, with linked department stores, a covered skywalk network, cinemas and many restaurants. It’s clean, easy to walk and lively until late, but it doesn’t have the old-street feel of Dadaocheng or the night markets of Ximending. Raohe Street Night Market and the Songshan area are a short MRT ride north. If you want old Taipei too, see our comparison of Ximending and Zhongshan.

How do I get from the airport?

From Taoyuan Airport, the Airport MRT express reaches Taipei Main Station in about 35–40 minutes; from there, the Red Line runs straight to Taipei 101/World Trade Center and Xiangshan, or you can change to the Blue Line for City Hall. A taxi to Xinyi typically takes 45–60 minutes without traffic. Songshan Airport, used by some flights from Japan, Korea and China, is much closer, on the Brown Line. See Taoyuan Airport to Taipei.

What should I check before booking?

  • The direction and floor of the room, and whether the tower view is guaranteed or only possible.
  • Minimum stays and prepayment rules for 31 December.
  • Walking time to Taipei City Hall or Xiangshan stations, rather than Taipei 101 station, which gets crowded.
  • Whether the hotel restricts guest access or adds security on New Year’s Eve.
  • Free cancellation for other dates, since view-room rates can change quickly.

Who should stay where?

  • Couples: Xinyi core, high-floor room facing the tower.
  • Families: Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall or Da’an — calmer, still close.
  • Budget travellers: stay near Taipei Main Station and travel in; see Taipei on a budget.
  • Photographers: Xiangshan, near the Elephant Mountain trailhead.
  • New Year’s Eve: anywhere within a 20-minute walk of City Hall plaza.

Notes for families and travellers with access needs

Xinyi is flat, with wide pavements, lifts and the elevated skywalk network linking malls and stations. Elephant Mountain’s trail is stairs only, so it’s not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. On New Year’s Eve, crowds around the tower are dense; families with young children often prefer to watch from a hotel or a quieter park further away.
