Booking a room for Christmas in Seoul? The neighbourhood you choose decides how your trip feels: walking out into department-store light shows, staying near the festival lights of the old town, or keeping a quiet, good-value base and travelling in for the evenings. Seoul is festive from late November, Christmas Day is a public holiday, and Christmas Eve is the city’s big date night, so central rooms fill quickly. This guide compares where to stay in Seoul for Christmas by atmosphere, noise, price pressure and transport, and explains when to book.

How does Christmas work in Seoul?
Roughly a quarter of Koreans are Christian, and Christmas is a national holiday on 25 December. For many young people, though, it’s mostly a romantic occasion: couples book dinners and hotel stays on Christmas Eve, much as people elsewhere do on Valentine’s Day. The city’s decorations go up in November, department stores compete with giant façade displays, and Seoul’s winter festival lights up the old centre from early December. There’s no long Christmas break — shops and offices reopen on the 26th — so the peak lasts only a few days.
Which neighbourhood should I book?
| Neighbourhood | Christmas atmosphere | Getting around | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong / City Hall (Jung-gu) | Very high: façade light shows, cathedral, street food | Lines 1, 2, 4; airport buses | Highest demand on 24–25 Dec; crowds |
| Jongno / Gwanghwamun / Insadong | High: festival lights, lanterns, markets | Lines 1, 3, 5 | Quieter after the festival hours |
| Seoul Station / Namdaemun | Medium: a short walk to Myeongdong | AREX to Incheon, KTX, Lines 1 and 4 | Area around the station is plain |
| Dongdaemun / DDP | Medium: DDP light shows, late-night shopping | Lines 1, 2, 4, 5 | Busy roads |
| Hongdae / Yeonnam | Medium: street performances, young crowd | Line 2, AREX | Noisy, especially on Christmas Eve |
| Gangnam / COEX | Medium: mall decorations, modern dining | Lines 2, 9 | 30–40 min from the old town |
| Jamsil | High for families: theme park parades, tower events | Lines 2, 8 | Far from the palaces |

Is it worth paying more for Myeongdong?
For a short Christmas trip, often yes. Myeongdong puts you between the city’s most famous department-store light displays, Myeongdong Cathedral, the street-food stalls and the walk to City Hall and Cheonggyecheon. You’ll see the lights several times without planning a journey. The downsides are noise, crowds on 24 and 25 December and higher prices; rooms facing side streets are quieter than those over the main shopping roads.
What about Jongno and the old town?
If Seoul Winter Festa runs as planned from 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027, Gwanghwamun Square, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul Plaza and Bosingak will host light installations, a winter market, an ice rink and the New Year bell ringing. Staying in Jongno or near Gwanghwamun means you can walk to the festival lights in the evening and to the palaces during the day. It’s an especially good choice if you’re staying through New Year’s Eve, when roads around Jongno close and taxis can’t reach the area.
Where can I save money without losing the atmosphere?
Seoul Station and Dongdaemun are the best compromises. Seoul Station is one subway stop or a 20-minute walk from Myeongdong, has the AREX train to Incheon Airport and KTX trains for side trips, and usually has more rooms available. Dongdaemun has many mid-range hotels, the DDP’s light shows and late-night shopping, and is well connected by four subway lines. Both are quieter at night than Myeongdong and Hongdae.
When should I book, and how fast do prices rise?
Treat 23–26 December like a peak event. Rooms in Myeongdong and Jongno, and especially rooms with city views, are booked well ahead by Korean couples and visitors from across Asia. A practical approach is to book a free-cancellation rate in September or October, then keep checking. Prices usually ease after 26 December, then climb again for 30–31 December. If you’re flexible, arriving a few days before Christmas often gives you the lights without the peak-night prices. See the best time to book a hotel.
How do I get in from the airport?
From Incheon Airport, the AREX express train reaches Seoul Station in about 43 minutes non-stop (the all-stop train takes a little longer), and airport limousine buses serve Myeongdong, Jongno, Dongdaemun, Gangnam and Jamsil directly, taking around an hour or more depending on traffic. Around Christmas, roads in the centre are busier in the evening, so the train is more predictable if you’re staying near Seoul Station or Myeongdong.
How do I plan the evenings?
Seoul’s Christmas sights cluster in a small area. A typical evening runs from the department-store displays in Myeongdong to Myeongdong Cathedral, then a walk to City Hall and along Cheonggyecheon to Gwanghwamun — about 3 kilometres in all, on flat streets. With a base in Jung-gu or Jongno, you can split this over two evenings and walk back to your hotel. From Gangnam or Jamsil, allow 30–40 minutes by subway each way.
What’s the weather like?
Late December in Seoul is cold, with daytime temperatures around freezing and nights often well below, plus a sharp wind in open squares. Snow is possible but not guaranteed. Choose a hotel close to a subway exit so you’re not walking far in the cold, and bring a warm coat, gloves and a hat.
What should I check before booking?
- Distance to the nearest subway exit — three minutes beats ten in sub-zero wind.
- Whether the room faces a main road or a side street, for noise on Christmas Eve.
- Heating and bedding: Korean hotels are warm, but some guesthouses use floor heating (ondol) with thin mattresses.
- Late check-in arrangements if you land in the evening.
- Free cancellation, so you can adjust if flights change during the busy season.
Is Seongsu a good choice for couples?
Seongsu, on the east side of the city, is one of Seoul’s trendiest neighbourhoods, with warehouse cafés, pop-up stores, design shops and restaurants, plus Seoul Forest nearby. Around Christmas, cafés and pop-ups decorate heavily and it feels festive without the crush of Myeongdong. Hotel choice is limited, so many couples stay elsewhere and visit for an afternoon and dinner.

Who should stay where?
- First-timers wanting the full Christmas feel: Myeongdong or City Hall.
- Couples: Jongno or a quiet street in Myeongdong; Seongsu for café dates.
- Families: Jamsil or near Seoul Station.
- Budget travellers: Dongdaemun or Seoul Station.
- Staying for New Year’s Eve too: Jongno, within walking distance of Bosingak.

Notes for families and travellers with access needs
Christmas Eve crowds in Myeongdong are dense, so families may prefer to see the lights on a weekday evening earlier in December. Subway stations have lifts, though exits with lifts can be some distance from where you need to be; a hotel within a few minutes of a lift-equipped exit helps. Jamsil’s malls and theme park are warm, step-free options on cold days.
