Deciding where to stay in Prague for Christmas markets is easier than in most cities, because the markets sit within walking distance of each other in the historic centre. The real choice is between being right above the crowds in the Old Town, staying across the river in quieter Malá Strana, or picking a residential district like Vinohrady with its own neighbourhood market. This guide compares the areas, shows where each market is, and explains when to book.

Does Prague have Christmas markets?
Yes — Prague has some of Europe’s best-known Christmas markets, and they’re free to enter. The two main ones are on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square; Visit Czechia and the City of Prague list both from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, open daily from about 10:00 to 22:00. Old Town Square has the big tree, lit at the opening and surrounded by wooden huts selling mulled wine (svařák), trdelník, sausages and crafts. Smaller markets appear on Náměstí Míru in Vinohrady, Náměstí Republiky and in front of some churches. A market at Prague Castle has run in some years but not reliably, so check before planning around it.
Where are the Christmas markets in Prague?
The main Christmas markets in Prague are in the centre, and you can walk between them in minutes.
| Market / area | Best for | Getting around | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Town Square (Staré Město) | The big tree, Astronomical Clock, the classic photo | Metro A Staroměstská, 5 min walk | Very crowded on weekend evenings |
| Wenceslas Square (Nové Město) | Long market avenue, food stalls | Metro A/B Můstek, A/C Muzeum | Busy, commercial streets around it |
| Náměstí Míru (Vinohrady) | Smaller, local market by St Ludmila church | Metro A Náměstí Míru | Shorter season in previous years |
| Náměstí Republiky | Quick stop near the Municipal House | Metro B Náměstí Republiky | Small; mostly food |
| Prague Castle area | Hilltop views when a market runs | Tram 22 or 23 | Not held every year; check first |

Where is the best area to stay in Prague?
For most first visits, the best area to stay in Prague is Praha 1, which covers the Old Town, Malá Strana, the Castle district and part of the New Town. Here’s how they differ at Christmas.
Old Town (Staré Město)
Staying in the Old Town puts you within five minutes of the Old Town Square market, Charles Bridge and the Jewish Quarter (Josefov). You can visit early in the morning, before the stalls fill, and again late at night when the tree is still lit. The downsides: rooms on the square’s side streets can be noisy until late, cobbles are hard work with luggage, and prices rise sharply for December weekends.
Malá Strana (Lesser Town)
Across Charles Bridge, Malá Strana has baroque streets, churches and quieter evenings. It’s a ten-minute walk over the bridge to the Old Town markets and an uphill walk to the castle. Trams 12, 15, 20, 22 and 23 run along its main street. It suits couples who want atmosphere without the market crowds outside the window.
New Town (Nové Město)
Despite its name, the New Town dates from the 14th century. It’s built around Wenceslas Square and has more modern hotels, wider streets and the best metro connections, with Můstek and Muzeum stations covering all three lines. You’re right by the Wenceslas Square market and a short walk from Old Town Square.
Vinohrady and Žižkov
Vinohrady (Praha 2) is a residential district of tree-lined streets, cafés and Art Nouveau buildings, with its own market on Náměstí Míru in front of the Church of St Ludmila. It’s a few stops on metro line A from the centre. Neighbouring Žižkov is cheaper and livelier, with lots of pubs.
Prague Christmas market dates: when should I go?
For 2026, the Prague Christmas market dates for Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square are 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The opening weekend, when the tree is lit, and the weekends of December are the busiest. Weekdays in early December are calmer, and accommodation is usually cheaper before 20 December. On 24 December, Czech families celebrate at home with a traditional dinner of carp and potato salad, and market stalls may keep shorter hours; check opening times if you’re there on Christmas Eve. The markets stay open after Christmas and through New Year’s Eve, when the Old Town is packed for midnight.
How do I get from the airport?
Václav Havel Airport is about 17 kilometres west of the centre. Trolleybus 59, which replaced bus 119 in March 2024, runs from the terminals to Nádraží Veleslavín in about 15 minutes, where you change to metro line A for Staroměstská (Old Town), Můstek or Náměstí Míru. The Airport Express (AE) bus goes to the main railway station, Praha hlavní nádraží, which is a short walk from the New Town. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are also widely used.
How many nights do I need?
Three or four nights is enough to see the markets, the castle, Charles Bridge and the Old Town without rushing, and to spend one evening in Vinohrady or Žižkov. With five nights or more, add a day trip: Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov are popular, and Dresden, Vienna and Budapest are all reachable by train for a multi-city Christmas trip. If you’re combining cities, staying near the main railway station or in the New Town saves time on departure day. Prices usually fall in the week before Christmas compared with early-December weekends, then rise again for New Year’s Eve, when the Old Town fills for fireworks and parties.
How cold is Prague in December?
December days are usually around 0–4°C, often grey, with frost at night; snow is possible but not guaranteed. You’ll be standing outside at markets, so pack a warm coat, hat, gloves and shoes with grip for icy cobbles. Hotels close to the markets make it easy to go back and warm up.
What should I check before booking?
- How far the hotel is from the nearest tram or metro stop, especially in Malá Strana where streets are steep.
- Whether the room faces a square or a side street — noise from late-night crowds carries.
- Lifts: many historic buildings have small lifts or none.
- City tax: Prague charges a per-person, per-night fee, usually paid at the hotel.
- Free cancellation, so you can switch if better dates or prices appear.

Who should stay where?
- First-timers: Old Town or the New Town near Můstek.
- Couples: Malá Strana, for quiet evenings and views.
- Families: New Town, for wider streets, modern hotels and metro access.
- Budget travellers: Vinohrady or Žižkov, a few stops away.
- Combining cities: Prague pairs well with Vienna by train.
Notes for families and travellers with access needs
Cobblestones are everywhere in the historic centre, which makes pushchairs and wheelchairs harder work, and Old Town Square gets crowded around the tree. Not every metro station has step-free access, so check before relying on one. The New Town has flatter streets and more modern hotels with lifts, which makes it easier for families and anyone with limited mobility.
